Mexico: The University Smartcard arrives at the Panamerican University, Guadalajara

Banco Santander has begun issuing the University Smartcard in Guadalajara’s Panamerican University, which was the first Mexican university in which holders of the new ID card were able to participate in a prize draw organised by Santander Universities Global Division.

As well as identifying its holder, this university ID card regulates access to the campus’s installations, and works as a debit card and for withdrawing cash, allowing registration fees to be paid by direct debit or over the internet.

The ceremony at which the ID cards were issued was attended by Juan Gerardo de la Borbolla Rivero, Vice-Chancellor of Panamerican University, who expressed his interest in the new identification system and thanked Banco Santander for the help and cooperation it offers the university.

During the event, Alejandro Rodríguez Magaña, Deputy Administrative Director, and Mario Alberto González Campos, Administrative Director, were accompanied by Juan Carlos Moller, Head of Santander Global Universities Division for the Americas, as well as Óscar Lozano Chapa and Héctor Silva Panero, managers in Santander Universities in Mexico, and several managers from the Western Region. After having attended the handing-out procedure for the ID cards from the students receiving them until they were activated, Mario Alberto González declared himself very satisfied with the clear and lively attention given to the university community by the bank’s team.

This issuing ceremony saw Guadalajara’s Panamerican University become the first university in Mexico in which a special promotion took place, including a raffle with prizes that included, amongst others, digital cameras, laptops, Playstation 3 consoles and MP3 players. Every student who collected a Smartcard was entered into the draw; furthermore, anyone who activated their card received promotional items and cinema tickets. At the end of the meeting, Luis Antonio Sánchez Ibarrola, the university’s secretary general, personally drawing the winning raffle tickets.

The launch of this promotion was very well-received by the university community, and 85% of the issued ID cards were handed in (of these, 87% were activated for financial uses).
