Santander supports the University of Göttingen

University of Göttingen

  • Financial support of annually more than 90,000 Euros and awarding of five scholarships.

13rd December 2013-. Santander Consumer Bank AG, through Banco Santander’s “Global Division  Santander Universidades”, and the Georg-August-University in Göttingen signed an agreement on a future cooperation. The bank will support some initiatives of the university through its Global Division Santander Universidades, a part of Santander dedicated to the collaboration with the university world that works in Germany as Santander Universitäten.

The aim of the cooperation is to provide financial support for the expansion of the Welcome Centre for international doctoral candidates. Furthermore Santander will support the development of a summer school and a service for graduates. In addition, Santander will provide five German scholarships for students of the University of Göttingen. 

Santander will support these projects of a total amount of 90,900 Euros annually for an initial period of three years on behalf of “Santander Universitäten”. The University of Göttingen is next to the University of Bremen as well as the University of Cologne, the Goethe University Frankfurt, the University of Heidelberg, the Westphalian Wilhelms University Münster and the University of Tübingen the seventh university that with the collaboration of “Santander Universitäten”. In the future more agreements will be sought with other top universities in Germany.

The agreement was signed by Prof. Dr. Ulrike Beisiegel, rector of the Georg-August-University in Göttingen, Ulrich Leuschner, CEO of Santander Consumer Bank in Germany, and Pedro de Elejabeitia, member of the board of Santander Consumer Bank and responsible for the Santander Bank’s retail business.

Since September 2011 the “Welcome Centre” offers international scientists and exchange students at the University of Göttingen counselling and contact in finding accommodation. Through the support the university will be able to combine the increased number of exchange students with the limited number of accommodation. With an annual amount of 30,300 Euros “Santander Universitäten” will support contracts for the creation of an administrative half-post and a student assistant. Within this supported project the assistants will be equipped with information material on amount of annually 2,000 Euros.

Furthermore Santander will support annual or biannual Göttingen SPIRIT summer schools for students at the Georg-August-University in Göttingen and exchange students. Within the summer schools the graduates can establish international contacts in groups of 20 or 30 participants. Santander financially supports this initiative with 30,300 Euros annually for a half-post and assistants and the marketing of the summer schools.

The University of Göttingen pays close attention to the international work of the alumni. Within this project “Santander Universitäten” will support the program “Die Universität Göttingen und ich” (“The University of Göttingen and Me”), recruiting alumni for various forms of commitment. An assistant post for the cultivation of contacts will be supported with 30,300 Euros annually.

Additionally “Santander Universitäten” will provide five “Deutschlandstipendien” (German scholarships) of a total amount of 9,000 Euros for an initial period of one year. The “Deutschlandstipendium” is an initiative of the Federal Government. Nationwide, “Santander Universitäten” momentarily supports 75 students through the “Deutschlandstipendium”.
