Santander UK, "Carbon Trust" Standard

  • Santander has achieved the Carbon Trust Standard the UK's leading environmental award for companies which have taken action on climate change

August 21th, 2012. The Carbon Trust Standard was awarded in recognition of a 3% reduction in its carbon footprint from last year. In addition, the bank received a Carbon Management score of 80%, higher than the average banking sector score of 73%.

Nick Roberts, COO, Santander Global Facilities (SGF) UK said: “This award recognizes that Santander takes its environmental impact seriously and that we have taken action to reduce carbon emissions. It also demonstrates our commitment to measure, manage and reduce our carbon emissions further year on year.”

SGF carried out more than 1,000 inspections last year to assess the efficiency of heating, air conditioning and lighting systems. As a result, new energy efficient equipment was installed to help us reduce energy, including:

  • New systems with energy efficient controls fitted in 117 branches and a further 86 branches had new energy efficient lighting schemes and controls installed.
  • In 336 branches inefficient lamps were replaced with new energy efficient versions. This ‘re-lamp’ programme will be reviewed every three years to ensure the most efficient lamps are installed and continue to help to further reduce energy consumption in branches.
