Santander reported an attributable profit of €10,337 million in the first nine months of 2025, up 11% from the same period last year – a record performance for the period. Its total customer base reached 178 million after adding more than seven million new customers over the past 12 months.

Santander delivered an attributable profit of €6,833 million in the first half of 2025, up 13% compared to the same period last year. This marks the strongest first half on record, driven by robust net interest income, record net fee income, and lower costs and provisions. Profit in the second quarter alone was €3,431 million (+7%), setting a fifth consecutive quarterly record.

Santander achieved a record attributable profit of €3,402 million in the first quarter of 2025, a 19% increase versus the same period last year thanks to record net fee income (+4%) and lower costs. In addition, the bank added nine million new customers with the total number of customers the group serves reaching 175 million customers.

Santander achieved an attributable profit of €12,574 million in 2024, a 14% increase versus 2023, thanks to strong revenue growth across all global businesses and regions, as well as the addition of eight million new customers to 173 million, with record results for the third year in a row. In addition, the group maintained disciplined cost control, with the best efficiency ratio in 15 years.

Santander achieved an attributable profit of €9,309 million in the first nine months of 2024, a 14% increase compared to the same period last year, thanks to strong revenue growth across all global businesses and regions, as well as the addition of five million new customers. Furthermore, the group maintained good cost control. Tax on profit in the period was €4,246 million, up 13%, resulting in an effective tax rate of 29%.

Santander achieved an attributable profit of €6,059 million in the first half of 2024, up 16% in current euros versus the same period last year, as strong growth in net interest income in all the global businesses and regions, supported by four million more customers, and very good cost control, more than offset the expected year-on-year growth in provisions.

Third quarter attributable profit was €2,902 million, up 26% (+20% in current euros). Versus the second quarter, profit was up 11%.

Santander achieved an attributable profit of €5,241 million in the first half of 2023, up 7% in both constant and current euros versus the same period last year, as strong growth in revenues, particularly in Europe, offset the year-on-year growth in provisions in North and South America. 

Excluding the impact of the temporary levy in Spain, which was accounted for in full for 2023 during the first quarter, attributable profit was €2,795million, up 10%

The group’s scale, diversification and customer focus resulted in a strong year, with customer numbers up seven million to 160 million, revenues up 12% to €52.2 billion and pre-provision profit (net operating income) up 13% to €28.3 billion.

Banco Santander achieved an attributable profit of €7,316 million in the first nine months of 2022, up 25% in current euros versus the first nine months of 2021. Excluding the restructuring charges of €530 million in the same period of 2021, underlying profit was up 15% in current euros.

Banco Santander achieved an underlying profit of €4,894 million in the first half of 2022, up 16% in current euros versus the first half of 2021. Attributable profit, which was impacted by restructuring charges of €530 million in the same period of 2021, was up 33% in current euros. In the second quarter alone, attributable profit was €2,351 million, up 14% in current euros and 2% in constant euros.

Banco Santander achieved an attributable profit of €2,543 million in the first quarter of 2022, up 58% in current euros versus the first quarter of 2021 when the bank incurred €530 million in restructuring charges. Underlying profit, which excludes the aforementioned charges, was up 19% in current euros.

The 2021 attributable profit is 25% higher in current euros than in 2019, before covid. 

Banco Santander achieved an attributable profit of €5,849 million in the first nine months of 2021. This compares to a loss of €9 billion in the same period last year, when the bank made a non-cash adjustment to the valuation of goodwill and deferred tax assets (DTAs). Excluding net charges of €530 million for restructuring costs already announced in Q1 2021, underlying profit for the first nine months was €6,379 million, up 87% versus the same period of last year. This is Santander’s highest underlying profit in the first nine months since 2009.

Underlying profit for the first half was €4,205 million (+153% in constant euros), excluding restructuring costs from the first quarter. Revenues increased 8% and net operating income grew 13% on a constant currency basis.

Banco Santander presented its results from the first quarter of 2021 at the Santander Group City, in Boadilla del Monte, Madrid.

Santander reported an underlying profit of €5,081 million in 2020, down 38% in current euros, due to an increase in loan-loss provisions attributable to the covid-19 pandemic. Although the pandemic has had a significant impact on the economic environment, net interest income and net fee income have shown signs of recovery in the second half of the year. In the fourth quarter, the bank achieved its highest customer revenues in the last two years in constant euros, reflecting these improvements.

Banco Santander achieved an underlying profit of €3,658 million in the first nine months of 2020, down 33%, due to an increase in loan-loss provisions attributable to the covid-19 pandemic. Although the pandemic has had a significant impact on customer activity, the bank noted improvement in the third quarter.

Banco Santander achieved an underlying profit of €1,908 million in the first half of 2020, down 48%, due to an increase in loan-loss provisions attributable to the covid-19 pandemic. While the pandemic has had a significant impact on customer activity, the underlying performance of the business was strong, supported by resilient customer revenues, higher than expected cost reductions, robust credit quality and good organic capital generation.

Banco Santander achieved an attributable profit of €331 million in the first quarter of 2020, down 82% year-on-year after incurring a net charge of €1,646 million, primarily due to overlay provisions of €1,600 million related to covid-19 based on the expected deterioration of the macroeconomic conditions arising from the health crisis.

Banco Santander achieved an attributable profit of €6,515 million in 2019, 17% less than in 2018, after recording net charges amounting to -€1,737 million. The charges related primarily to the UK goodwill impairment announced in September last year (-€1,491 million), as well as restructuring costs in several markets and other provisions. 

Banco Santander posted its best ordinary profit for any quarter in almost a decade. From June to September 2019, the Group earned €2,135 million (7% more than in the same period the year before). This shows how robust and recurrent the business is. In the first nine months of 2019, Santander earned an attributable profit of €3,732 million.

Banco Santander increased attributable profit during the first nine months of 2018 by 13% to €5,742 million (+28% in constant euros), as strong growth in revenues in several markets, including Brazil, Spain, Mexico and Portugal, combined with improvements in credit quality, more than offset the impact of exchange rate depreciation against the euro in certain currencies, including the Argentine peso.
