Santander announces the renewal of its sponsorship of London’s cycle hire scheme until 2032.
Santander and Transport for London (TfL) have been working in partnership since 2015 to keep active travel in London accessible to all through Santander Cycles.
Banco Santander’s Executive Chair, Ana Botin, and Santander UK CEO, Mike Regnier, join the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, TfL’s Customer Director, Emma Strain, and London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, Will Norman, on the Southbank in London on Wednesday afternoon to mark the occasion.
London’s cycle hire scheme continues to thrive, 6.1 million hires in 2025 so far, a 3 per cent increase on this time last year.
Santander has today (25 September 2025) announced the renewal of its sponsorship of London’s cycle hire scheme for another seven years – from September 2025 to 2032 - continuing the long-running success of the bank’s partnership with Transport for London (TfL). Banco Santander’s Executive Chair, Ana Botin, and Santander’s UK CEO, Mike Regnier, were joined by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, Will Norman, and TfL’s Customer Director, Emma Strain, yesterday afternoon at the iconic Southbank in central London to honour the occasion.
The renewal marks the beginning of a multimillion-pound investment into the scheme, which will see improvements to the fleet, on-street infrastructure, and a new and improved Santander Cycles app, making it quicker and easier for customers to hire bikes.
Over the past 10 years, TfL and Santander have worked together to invest in the cycle hire scheme and improve its offering to Londoners. The scheme now has more than 2,000 highly popular e-bikes, as well as a fleet of 10,000 classic bikes and over 800 docking stations across central and inner London. More than 2.8 million hires have been made on the fleet of e-bikes since they were introduced in 2022, and over 106 million hires have been made across all bikes since Santander's sponsorship of the scheme started in 2015.
With further investment in the pipeline, thousands more people will be able to benefit from the accessibility and health benefits that Santander Cycles provides. New cycle docking stations will be installed in Agar Grove in Camden, at Brockwell Lido in Brixton, in City Island and in Hackney. Future plans include creating new docking stations on Harrow Road in Westminster and Queen Street in the City of London. This will ensure the scheme continues to grow in the years to come and both Londoners, and those visiting the capital, will be able to explore the city in a sustainable and affordable way. So far in 2025, more than 6.1 million hires have taken place, a 3 per cent increase on the same time last year.
I am delighted to announce the renewal of the Santander Cycles scheme for another seven years. Santander Cycles is a catalyst for growth and connectivity across London, contributing more than £2.6m to the UK economy in last year alone. We feel extremely proud of the positive impact the scheme has had in helping people and businesses in London to prosper and look forward to continuing our partnership with TfL.
Santander Cycles continues to go from strength to strength in 2025, with record-breaking usage and growing popularity across London. So far this year, more than 6.1 million hires have taken place, and ridership continues to increase again this year. The growing popularity shows the success of the scheme as an integral part to London's green and healthy future.
Santander Cycles is a vital part of London's transport system, so we are thrilled to be continuing our work with Santander following their renewal of the scheme’s sponsorship. We are looking forward to working with them to make the iconic cycle hire scheme even better over the coming years, to ensure that even more Londoners and visitors can discover all the benefits that cycling has to offer.
