Juan Mata, Spanish football player of Manchester United, has created Common Goal where football players from around the world donate 1% of their wages to charitable causes. This initiative is backed by Banco Santander as part of its support of football, its values and potential as an engine of prosper.

It’s well known that football moves thousands of millions of euros every year. Therefore, two years ago Juan Mata proposed to his teammates the idea of donating 1% of their wages to a fund that supports charities. That’s how Common Goal was created.

Founded in 2017 thanks to a partnership between Juan Mata and Jürgen Griesbeck, founder of other solidary projects, Common Goal collaborates with more than 125 humanitarian organizations in 80 countries, working with almost 3 million children.

The initiative was well-received and, within a few weeks, acquired sponsorships from companies like Banco Santander, Facebook, EA Sports, and Onefootball. In fact, the organization presided over by Ana Botín became the Champions League’s first sponsor last season. In this way, Banco Santander again supports football, its values and potential as an engine of progress. And to do so, it launched the initiative Football Canbecausefootball can inspire both people and society to improve their lives. And because Banco Santander wants to connect people just as sports, especially football, does.

Common Goal includes more than 300 members including football players, managers, and companies. President of UEFA, Aleksander Ceferin, was first in offering his collaboration, followed by players Chiellini, Alex Morgan, Hummels, Kagawa…

FC Nordsjaelland, from Denmark, is the only club which has joined the initiative at the moment, and it collects funds from its newcomers as well as its long-standing members.

Common Goal even appears in the popular video game FIFA 19, thanks to collaboration with EA Sports, through the fictitious character Alex Hunter.

At just two years of age, Common Goal has raised more than 700,000 euros which have been invested in projects around the world.
