Madrid, 14 July 2021 - PRESS RELEASE
Euromoney has recognised the accelerated digitalization of Santander’s operations by naming it the Best Digital Bank in Western Europe award at its 2021 Awards for Excellence. In a year marred by the covid-19 health and economic crisis, the magazine acknowledged Santander’s efforts to serve its customers through digital channels, using artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to create better, more predictive models and services.

For example, Santander Spain’s new digital strategy, announced in September 2020, stands out for its redesigned, more personalized app, with new functions including a predictive financial agenda, a global text search engine and a geolocator featuring a map showing card purchases.

The magazine also lauded Santander’s work to support the transition to a low-carbon economy, naming the bank the Best Bank for Sustainable Finance in Latin America. Santander is the leading bank globally in renewable energy project finance and has also launched several retail products that help protect the environment, including green mortgages, energy efficiency loans and renewable energy installations.

Furthermore, Euromoney commended Santander for its support for SMEs in 2021, naming it Best Bank for SMEs award in Latin America. The award reflects the relief measures Santander implemented to support customers during the pandemic, including loans and micro-loans and payment holidays that enabled millions of customers and their families to access funds. In 2020 Santander granted over 1 billion euros per day in new loans for SMEs and corporates.

Ana Botin, Executive Chairman of Banco Santander said, “Our teams going the extra mile for our customers, backed by our investment in technology, allows us to respond to the needs of the people and business we serve, while building the Santander of the future. We are committed to supporting the transition to a digital and green economy and are delighted that Euromoney has recognised the efforts of our colleagues.”

Santander was also named Best Bank in Portugal, Argentina, Chile, and Best Investment Bank in Portugal and Mexico.

Euromoney, which has been a leading publication in international finance for 50 years, established its Awards for Excellence in 1992.
