Ambassador of Brazil to the Kingdom of Spain and to the Principality of Andorra
A diplomat with over 45 years’ experience, Ambassador Luiz Alberto Figueiredo Machado has served as Brazil’s Permanent Representative to the UN, in New York; as Ambassador to the United States; to Portugal; and to Qatar. He is, at present, Brazil’s Ambassador to Madrid.
Previously, he served in the UN’s Brazilian Mission in New York; at the Brazilian Embassies in Santiago, Washington and Ottawa, respectively; and, also, at the UNESCO Mission, in Paris.
In Brazil, he held various positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, having headed the Sub-Directorate for Sea, Antarctica and Space and the Sub-Directorate for Environmental Policy and Sustainable Development. He was, also, Director General of the Department of Environment and Special Issues, and Deputy Secretary General for Environment, Energy, Science and Technology.
For many years, he has headed Brazilian delegations at international conferences and at meetings on sustainable development and the environment, particularly those related to climate change. In 2016, he was awarded the Elizabeth Haub International Prize for Environmental Diplomacy.
Ambassador Figueiredo Machado was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2013 to 2014.
