19 de junio de 2012. Through its Santander Universities global division, the Bank presented these awards in Puerto Rico, as part of its Plan to Support Education there.

A total of 50 proposals were submitted to the second edition of the Prize for Innovation in Puerto Rico. The winners will receive grants to develop their business plan.

At the awards ceremony, Rafael Vélez, head of Santander Universities in Puerto Rico, said: “For Santander these prizes are about rewarding the hard work of universities, our partners, and helping young university students when they most need it. We are very pleased to see that they can achieve their goals thanks to our initiative. These prizes increase the capacity of these young people to be future entrepreneurs and develop their own businesses”.

First prize, worth up to $10,000 dollars, went to Recinto de Mayagüez University, for its Stography project. Second prize, worth $5,000 dollars, went to the Coffee Belt project, submitted by Sagrado Corazón University, and third prize, for $3,000, went to the Small Entrepreneurs' Club at the Recinto de Bayamón University.

There were two honorary prizes, each worth $1,500, which went to: Direct News Interactive (DNI) and El Arte de la Aventura Fría, and a further five grants for $1,000, in the category of videos.

These prizes are only open to business plans in the last stages of development. Candidates must have a university supervisor for their project. Their supervisor may or may not be one of their lecturers. Furthermore, participants prepared a video to present an innovative idea about the characteristics of a successful entrepreneur. The videos were evaluated in terms of creativity, content, clarity and originality.

The Prize for Business Innovation is part of the Plan to Support Higher Education (PAES), which Banco Santander launched in Puerto de Rico through its Santander Universities global division.
