*Santander Universities and Universia

We see our commitment to higher education as an opportunity to help people and companies progress and we channel our efforts through Santander Universities, a unique and pioneering global programme that offers education, employability and entrepreneurship opportunities to university students and employees (Santander Scholarships) and training and support for the growth and transformation of innovative start-ups and SMEs (Santander X). From the outset, we have invested more than €2 billion and awarded over 630,000 scholarships and grants.

To this end, we also have Universia, the open and responsible platform for guidance, training and employability available to students, universities and companies, and the Fundación Universia, which promotes the social inclusion and labour market integration of university students with disabilities.

“Banco Santander wants to use education to help people face the challenges associated with the fourth industrial revolution, especially those that affect employability. Our scholarship and entrepreneurship programmes run in collaboration with prestigious international universities and institutions are focused in this direction, which is becoming even more important in the context of this pandemic", said Javier Roglá, the global head of Santander Universities, CEO of Universia and vice chairman of the Fundación Universia.

We have developed one of the largest scholarship programmes in the world promoted by a private company: Santander Scholarships.

The different scholarships that we promote at Banco Santander-Santander Universities through our collaboration agreements with more than 1000 universities and institutions in 19 different countries can be found on the website www.becas-santander.com.

In 2020 alone, we have awarded more than 48,800 Santander Scholarships and 400 different scholarship programmes to drive students' digital connectivity, facilitate young people's access to higher education and promote academic mobility nationally and internationally.

At Santander Universities, we also support the employment of university students and employees through scholarships to develop professional, linguistic, digital and transversal skills that improve their employability, and with internship programmes in companies and SMEs, offering them job guidance services and helping them find their first job and start on their career path. More than 75,200 people have benefited from internship scholarships and other employment support programmes in 2020.

As a new feature, starting in 2021, we have expanded the profiles and age range to access to some programmes, paying special attention to the new needs of the market, to favour and increase employability and to promote lifelong learning as a key factor in academic and professional progress.

Banco Santander-Santander Universities promotes the Santander Scholarship programmes, among which we highlight seven disciplines within our fields of action to promote education and employment:

  • Santander Tech Scholarships, which promote learning based on new technologies, programming or technological innovation to master digital and technological languages, such as blockchain, machine learning, cloud & DevOps or product design strategies.
  • Santander Skills Scholarships, which promote development of the horizontal multiple skills (soft and hard skills) that are essential to function in the world of work. This discipline also includes programmes aimed at developing entrepreneurial skills for those at a very early stage of the entrepreneurial cycle.
  • Santander Women Scholarships, designed to promote the professional development, leadership capacity and negotiation skills of the next generation of women leaders.
  • Santander Language Scholarships, which strengthen the command of languages in the work environment.
  • Santander Scholarships Studies which aid the completion of studies through specific support to ensure those with limited resources can achieve academic excellence, and generate international mobility opportunities.
  • Santander Internship Scholarships to promote the employability of university students through practical work experience. The goal of these scholarships is to offer recent graduates opportunities to access quality first jobs.
  • Santander Research Scholarships, designed to give material and financial support to undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students to start or continue with their research plans.

Through Santander X, Banco Santander's global entrepreneurship community, we support the training and development of innovative startups, and we promote the internationalization and  digitization of SMEs, accompanying the entrepreneur in each of the stages of their journey. Thanks to our community, entrepreneurs can access to international resources for their solutions such as training, visibility, mentoring and networking. In 2020 alone, we supported over 32,700 entrepreneurs in 224 training, challenge and awards programmes.
