Madrid and New York, 20 January 2026.- Getnet, the global payments fintech owned by Santander, is setting out its strategy for agentic commerce, a model in which autonomous AI agents initiate, manage and execute purchases and related payments on behalf of consumers.

Up to 30% of global e-commerce transaction value is expected to be influenced by agentic AI by 2030, representing approximately USD 17.5 trillion in gross merchandise value, according to Deloitte-based market estimates. This shift has direct implications for the payments industry, where infrastructure must be prepared to securely capture transactions initiated by intelligent agents rather than human users.

Getnet’s approach builds on capabilities already deployed across its global acquiring platform, such as Single Entry Point (SEP), a unified API that enables multi-country integration and supports agent-initiated transactions with built-in security and compliance. Building on this infrastructure, Getnet is developing additional agentic capabilities designed to integrate AI agents directly into payment flows, including agent identification and validation mechanisms, standardised APIs for capturing agent-initiated payments and interoperability with industry protocols.

Getnet is positioning itself as a strategic partner for merchants operating in the agentic commerce ecosystem, focusing on practical enablement rather than experimentation. Its platform is designed to support both large corporates with advanced digital capabilities and SMEs seeking ready-to-use solutions, allowing them to participate in agent-driven commerce without requiring complex internal developments.

Juan Franco, Getnet global CEO, said: “Agentic commerce represents a turning point at which AI ceases to observe the customer’s journey and starts to drive it with autonomous agents that discover, make deals and pay on behalf of customers. In this regard, Getnet’s vision is to be our customers’ trusted advisor and enabler, transforming our merchant acquisition, risk management and data capabilities skills into an open, intelligent platform that allows merchants to handle AI agents as easily as they handle human customers now.”

These developments are outlined in the report “Getnet at the Forefront of Agentic Commerce”, developed by Getnet in collaboration with Monitor Deloitte and unveiled during an event with clients and strategic partners held alongside “NRF 2026: Retail’s Big Show” in New York earlier this month. It analyses the impact of agentic AI on commerce and payments and highlights strong signals of merchant and consumer readiness for this new model. The full report is available here.

Getnet ranks among the world’s top 10 merchant acquirers and is recognised as the number one acquirer in Latin America by number of transactions, according to The Nilson Report: The 150 Largest Merchant Acquirers Worldwide - 2024. This positioning reflects the trust of millions of merchants, the robustness of Getnet’s payment and lending solutions for SMEs, and its ability to support large corporates through a unified and secure platform connecting multiple payment methods across Latin America and Iberia, underpinned by the scale, technology and expertise of Santander.
