Analysis of environmental and social risks in credit operations

Within the framework of our sustainability policies, we analyse the environmental and social risks of all our project finance deals. To manage it, we take into account the best practices at an international level.

Equator Principles

The Bank has implemented processes to identify, analyse and evaluate credit operations governed by Group policies that are based on the Ecuador Principles, to which the Bank has been a signatory since 2009 after the approval of the Board of Directors.

In 2014 the adaptation of the Bank to the new requirements of the Ecuador Principles III (EPIII) resulted in a redefinition of internal processes of detection and analysis of operations.

Additionally, and as a direct consequence of the greater number of operations subject to EPIII, the Bank developed an obligatory e-learning training for almost 3,000 employees.

UNEP FI pilot project on implementing the TCFD recommendations for banks

In 2017, together with 15 other leading banks, Santander joined this initiative to understand today's environmental, social and governance challenges, why they matter to finance, and how to actively participate in addressing them.

In 2018 two relevant outcomes were published: the first, a guidance focusing on transition risk (Extending Our Horizons: Accessing credit risk and opportunity in a changing climate) and the second, a report that helps banks assess risks and opportunities arising from physical risk (Navigating a New Climate).

Sector policies

The Group has approved specific sectoral policies that contain the criteria for analyzing environmental and social risks in customers’ activities in sensitive sectors, such as defense, energy, soft commodities and mining & metals or other policies carried out in this respect.
