José Juan Ruiz

Chairman of the Elcano Royal Institute

José Juan Ruiz is currently Chairman of the Elcano Royal Institute and has been a member of its Scientific Council for 10 years. A trained economist, he is a member of Spain's High Corps of Economists and Trade Experts. During his career, he has held roles at the Spanish Ministry of Economy and worked in the private sector as chief economist at Argentaria, AFI and Banco Santander (in Latin America). Recently, he was chief economist and director of research at the Inter-American Development Bank. He is currently a member of the Economic Affairs Advisory Council of the Spanish Government’s First Deputy Prime Minister.

He has extensive experience in European and global organizations and has been a board member of various public and private companies, a university lecturer, and chair of University of Castilla-La Mancha’s social committee. A frequent contributor in the media, he has been a member of the editorial boards of Política Exterior, Prisa and Grupo Recoletos.
