Grupo Ortiz has been running construction projects and infrastructure concessions in Spain for over 60 years. In 2010, it turned to Santander to help it expand into international markets. Today, it‘s a leading energy and construction firm in Colombia, Japan, Mexico, the US and other countries.

Santander and Grupo Ortiz share an aim to grow sustainably and responsibly. That’s why Santander was keen to help this once small, Spain-based building firm expand internationally.

Since taking its operations overseas, Grupo Ortiz has grown steadily; it now counts Colombia, Mexico and Peru among its bases in Latin America. But international growth meant greater financing needs. And that’s where Santander came in, with our products and services and our local teams, which used their market expertise to help Grupo Ortiz get off the ground in each new country.

“We’ve provided financing and banking services to Grupo Ortiz since its inception. Given its international transformation over the past 10 years and both groups’ huge synergy in Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and other countries, we were able to help it set up in each market”, said Jaime Mateo Hernández, Head of Large Corporates at Santander España.

Grupo Ortiz now boasts over 2,000 employees working on concession, energy, infrastructure, service and asset solutions.

At Grupo Santander, we believe in the potential of Latin America’s economies and businesses. With a wealth of opportunity for companies looking to expand, Latin America is a market that many are looking to break into.

But that opportunity must be seized, and that’s exactly what Grupo Ortiz did. In addition to Latin America, it also operates in Europe (mainly in France) and Asia (mainly in Japan).

According to Grupo Oritz, a crucial element of Santander’s support is the communication between the bank’s subsidiaries. This enables Santander to build a global relationship with the customer, who can feel confident that no matter which country it operates in, it’ll always be dealing with "its bank".

The groups’ solid relationship “began with the clerical matters like account opening but moved on to supporting Grupo Ortiz with guarantees in contract tenders and, recently, funding for one of its major concessions in Colombia”, said Jaime Mateo Hernández.

We’ve made numerous improvements to our journey together, including the support of Santander’s International Desk and Multinationals teams, which have taken the relationship to heights that would be difficult to reach without Grupo Santander’s global scale and local leadership.
