Mönchengladbach/ Düsseldorf, September 4th, 2018. SANTANDER NOTICIAS.
Santander Consumer Bank AG will support the Heinrich Heine University of Düsseldorf (HHU) with an endowed junior professorship for legal-ethical questions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the Faculty of Law as part of the division "Santander Universities". Santander will also finance ten German scholarships for talented students.

Rector Prof. Dr. Anja Steinbeck and Oliver Burda, Deputy Chairman of Santander Germany, signed a cooperation agreement at HHU today.

Rector Prof. Anja Steinbeck at the signing of the contract: "I would like to express my sincere thanks to Santander for this extremely generous support. It enables us to establish a junior professorship that will deal with highly topical legal and legal-ethical questions of artificial intelligence. This gives us a pioneering role in Germany. The professorship also fits in perfectly with our digitization strategy. In addition, the University of Düsseldorf is awarding scholarships for students with children for the first time this year in its program 'seizing opportunities'. Part of the funding provided by Santander will go there."

Oliver Burda emphasized: "We are proud to welcome another important university with HHU in the global network Santander Universities global network and in the immediate vicinity of our corporate headquarters. Digitization is not just a buzzword for Santander, but real practice and the way forward, where we want to keep the ethical issue in mind. This is another reason why we are keen to support the endowed professorship, as we as a bank hope to gain knowledge through regular exchange.

The new Endowed Junior Professorship for Legal Ethics in Artificial Intelligence and half a research assistant position will be funded by Santander for a period of six years. It is intended to advance legal research in the field AI from its foundations. The junior professorship will address AI issues in all areas of private law, criminal law and public law, both in research and in teaching and also interdisciplinary research with the other faculties of the HHU. The call for applications and the filling of the position are planned for the coming year.

The Faculty of Law offers ideal conditions for dealing with legal and ethical legal issues in connection with the AI: It has a clear focus on corporate law, is optimally networked with Düsseldorf as a legal, financial and insurance location and is part of a university with numerous projects in the field of digitization and artificial intelligence in very different faculties.

The German Scholarship supports particularly talented students of all faculties in Bachelor's, Master's and State Examination courses with 300 euros per month, regardless of income. One half of the amount is borne by sponsors such as companies, foundations or private individuals, the other by the Confederation. As a family-friendly university, the HHU will for the first time award up to 10% of the scholarships with an extended range of services to students with one or more underage children in its "seizing opportunities" program in 2018.

The HHU has been the university of the state capital of NRW since 1965 and is a permanent fixture in the German university landscape. Around 34,000 students study at the Faculties of Medicine, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Philosophy, Economics and Law. Scientific research traditionally focuses on the life sciences. Most recently, the "Excellence Initiative" of the German federal and state governments won the support of a cluster of excellence in plant breeding research. More about the HHU at www.hhu.de.
