University College London

London, 12th May 2015-. Nathan Bostock, Santander UK's CEO, took part in a round table held at University College London joined by students and businessmen from small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with the aim to discuss the role Santander has played in supporting the work of the programme UCL Advances through SME Internships and other means.

Nathan Bostock was introduced to the table by the President and Provost of the institution, Professor Michael Arthur with whom he also had the chance to discuss the progress of the agreement between both institutions. University College London has strong links with the Bank after the signing of a collaboration agreement in 2007.

Santander UK’s Chief Executive Officer pointed out during his speech the role banks can play in encouraging an entrepreneurial spirit amongst students and improving student employability.

Among the participants in the roundtable were Biobean, last year winners of the Santander Universities Entrepreneurship Awards. Bio bean is a green energy company that has industrialised the process of recycling waste coffee grounds into Advanced Biofuels.

After the round table Nathan met with some of the scholars and interns who have benefited from Santander funding.

Earlier that day Nathan visited 2 university branches: first the branch located in Tottenham Court Road which serves several London universities and later the one located in the UCL campus. Nathan discussed with the members of the teams in each branch the importance of the recently created role of University Relationship Branch Manager (URBM) which is exclusive to university branches and which links the role of Branch Manager to the close relationship established with the university through the agreements signed. Nathan Bostock will continue visiting universities throughout the UK in the coming months.

Nathan Bostock said: “I would like to thank University College London for giving me the chance to speak to some of its students and staff today, as well as some of the SMEs who have taken part in the internship scheme. The commitment Santander has with higher education is unparalleled and the partnership with UCL is a great example of how two very different institutions can work together. Through this agreement we have achieved great things and ultimately benefitted not only the university community but also SMEs by giving them access to recent graduates who will bring fresh ideas to their companies helping them prosper”.

Santander Universities maintains a stable alliance with close to 1,200 academic institutions in 20 countries. This is a network where universities from all over the world can meet and engage in dialogue. More information: www.santander.com/universities
