Goldsmiths partners with Santander for international scholarships

22 May 2012. Goldsmiths, University of London has signed an agreement with Santander for students to receive a total of £120,000 in scholarship funding over three years.

The agreement was signed by Patrick Loughrey, Goldsmiths’ Warden, and Luis Juste, Director Santander Universities UK, at a ceremony on 21 May attended by members of the College and the bank.

The bank’s support, through its Santander Universities Global Division, will fund awards for flexible scholarship and mobility support for students and staff to study or research within the UK and overseas as well as a support fund to enterprise and entrepreneurship initiatives.

The agreement has two parts totalling £40,000 per year and will run for three years initially. The first part consists of seven scholarship awards each of £5,000 for international students applying for postgraduate courses. The second part will see £5,000 donated in support of activities in entrepreneurship, enterprise and management.

Goldsmiths plans to offer the scholarships to students from Latin America, increasing its already-existing cohort of more than 100 students from that region currently studying in a range of social science and humanities disciplines.

Warden of Goldsmiths Patrick Loughrey said: “Nurturing and growing our student recruitment and partnerships with international institutions is a key part of our corporate strategy. It is really inspiring to find a partner organisation from the business world which understands the central and unique role of universities in meeting the challenges of the future.”

Luis Juste said: “Goldsmiths becomes the 60th UK university and the 13th in London to sign an agreement with Santander. Goldsmiths is a leader in the fields of social sciences, humanities and arts and will become an excellent addition to the big Santander Universities family of over 1,020 universities in three continents. We are delighted to have such a reputed institution among our partners.”

During his speech Mr Juste highlighted the importance of London as a European cultural and educational centre that attracts thousands of international students from all over the world. He exhorted all public and private institutions to invest in education with international collaboration and transfer of knowledge as main priorities.

Santander, through its Santander Universities Global Division, began its alliance with universities in 1996; since then the bank has signed 1,020 agreements in Asia, Europe and America. In the UK the network began its activity in 2007.
