Santander Germany supports the University of Tübingen

  • Financial support of 102,000 Euros and awarding of seven scholarships.

3rd December 2013-. Banco Santander and the University of Tübingen signed an agreement on a future cooperation. The bank will support some initiatives of the university through its Global Division Santander Universidades, a part of Santander dedicated to the collaboration with the university world that works in Germany as Santander Universitäten.

The aim of the cooperation is to provide financial support for the expansion of the Fachsprachenzentrum (Language Learning Centre) for students, doctoral candidates, young researchers and employees at the University of Tübingen. In addition Santander will provide five scholarships for students of the university and two further scholarships for Spanish students in the department of archeology at the University of Granada.

Santander will support these projects of a total amount of 102,000 Euros for an initial period of three years on behalf of “Santander Universitäten”. The University of Tübingen is next to the University of Bremen as well as the University of Cologne , the Goethe University Frankfurt, the University of Heidelberg and the Westphalian Wilhelms University Münster the sixth university that joins “Santander Universitäten”. In the future more agreements will be sought with other top universities in Germany.

The agreement was signed by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Bernd Engler, rector of the University of Tübingen, Ulrich Leuschner, CEO of Santander Consumer Bank in Germany, and Pedro de Elejabeitia, member of the board of Santander Consumer Bank and responsible for the Santander Banks retail business.

Built in 2001, the Fachsprachenzentrum (FSZ) offers students, young researchers and also employees of the University of Tübingen a focal point for the organization of language courses on four levels. In these courses students gain knowledge in scientific languages and can prepare for travels abroad and a professional career in economics. The FSZ offers language courses in English, Spanish, Catalan, French, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Swedish. With an annual amount of 56,000 Euros “Santander Universitäten” will support additional contracts for the creation of a limited half-post for a Spanish teacher and a quarter-post for an English teacher. Within this project Santander supports an optimized level calibration for the placement tests through the financing of contracts for computer linguists.

For the support of a sustainable scientific exchange between the German and Spanish Egyptology, “Santander Universitäten” will provide two scholarships for Spanish doctoral students in the department of archeology at the University of Granada. With a total amount of 32,000 Euros for a year, Santander supports a three-month lasting research in Luxor, Egypt, and the subsequent dissertation in the department of Egyptology at the University of Tübingen. Furthermore Santander supports the publication of the Alexandersanktuar (Alexander sanctuary) of Karnak. Through the project the sanctuary shall be restored and drawn in reliefs to be provided to the public.

Additionally “Santander Universitäten” will provide five “Deutschlandstipendien” (German scholarships) of a total amount of 9,000 Euros for an initial period of one year. The “Deutschlandstipendium” is an initiative of the Federal Government. Nationwide, “Santander Universitäten” momentarily supports 70 students through the “Deutschlandstipendium”.
