Santander UK sponsors an award for responsible SMEs

  • The award recognises those companies who have shown innovation, creativity and a sustained commitment to corporate responsibility. The awards are given by the organisation Business in the Community.

Madrid, 16 de julio de 2012. Santander UK sponsored the small business category at the ‘Business in the Community Awards for Excellence’.The Bank has been a member for the past 11 years of Business in the Community (BITC), a highly regarded organisation promoting sustainable and responsible business practice amongst its more than 850 members. Steve Pateman, executive director and head of UK Banking joined their patron, HRH Prince of Wales, and 900 other business leaders and special guests for the gala event, which took place in London on 27 June.

The Santander Responsible Small Company Award was won by Cleone Foods, a family run business in Birmingham specialising in Jamaican food products.

Steve Pateman presented Cleone Foods with their award and said: “I’m delighted they won as this business is the perfect example of an organisation that thinks and acts locally. From recruiting staff in the community to working with local suppliers and sharing their business model with other growing SMEs.”

“By creating this ethical, robust business model and focusing on their social, economic and environmental goals they’ve achieved an excellent reputation, which has enabled them to secure significant contracts with leading national food retailers.”

They won the award for their commitment to corporate social responsibility through ensuring close links with their local community.  Most of their staff are local people who are provided with training and development opportunities. Cleone have set up relationships with local suppliers and maintain an environmental policy which ensures 99% of their waste is recycled.

Sponsorship of the award forms part of a corporate partnership with Business in the Community which sees Santander supporting a range of the charity’s initiatives aimed at helping SMEs to develop and embed responsible business, including an Enterprise Inquiries series, Responsible Business Check-Up and Enterprise Checklist.
