Heidelberg University - a partner in Germany

  • The collaboration with Heidelberg University, one of the world’s most prestigious seats of learning, is set to enhance the bank’s presence in Germany.

Madrid, 18 January 2016. Delegation from Heidelberg University in Germany, headed by the Dean, Prof. Dr. Bernhard Eitel, paid a visit to Santander Group City to discuss the social impact achieved in the country as a result of the collaboration with Banco Santander.

José Antonio Villasante, senior executive vice-president of Banco Santander and head of Santander Universities, along with other executives from this area, met the delegation from the German university to review the status of the collaboration between the two and the roll out of future projects between the bank and one of the world’s most prestigious institutes of higher education and Germany’s oldest university.

Heidelberg University, founded in 1386, is renowned for the quality of its teaching and advances in research. It is one of the nine German Universities of Excellence, and a founder member of the League of European Research Universities, the Coimbra Group and the European University Association.

Banco Santander and Heidelberg University have been working together, since 2011, to promote international mobility for students and young scientists with innovative international research projects, with a focus on reporting their findings to wider society.

In 2013, the two institutions strengthened their collaboration by signing an agreement to develop the programmes: TOP Europe – LatinAmerica and ÉLITE LatinAmerica – Europe - Asia, through which the bank finances summer and winter schools for young researchers and PHD students.

Heidelberg will be a pioneer among German universities in the implementation of the University Smart Card and setting up a university student service office in Germany.

Additionally, through its Study Centre for IberoAmerica (IAZ), Heidelberg University develops and coordinates European cooperation projects with the best universities in Latin America, specifically in Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Mexico.

Banco Santander is the largest investor in education in the world (Varkey/UNESCO - Fortune 500 report). The initiative is being backed by Santander Universities, which has 1,200 cooperation agreements in place with universities and institutions worldwide. In Germany, the bank has collaboration agreements with 11 university through Santander Universities.
